2005: The Year of Pocker

John: What struck you the most about 2005 in the world of pocker? What's the thing that stands out that defines the year for you the most? The Women's Pocker Network.com along with partner World Women's Pocker Tour announced today that Professional Pocker Player Kathy Liebert will be the official spokeswoman for the group. Kathy is one of the top female pocker pros in the world and the first female to win a million dollar payday when she won the first PartyPocker Million prize. Bluff Magazine, America's largest pocker magazine, is gearing up for Mother's Day as a flood of orders are being received by husbands purchasing subscriptions for their wives. With pocker at an almost omnipresent state throughout the nation, women are catching the Texas (Hold'em) flu in record numbers. What used to be exclusively a "Man's Game" playing pocker has become an essential skill for both men and women.

Women now make up 35% of the pocker community, and that number is on the rise. Eventually, experts predict that the ratio of women to men playing pocker will level out at 50/50 or may tip slightly towards women. Bluff publisher, Eric Morris, attributes the popularity of pocker among women to the female stars on the World Pocker Tour. "Pocker players like Annie Duke, Clonie Gowen and Evelyn Ng and Jennifer Harmon have inspired women to get involved on the pocker scene. They have also disproved the myth that pocker is a man's domain by consistently beating many of the male professionals. Bluff Magazine's popularity at Mother's Day may have something to do with that, we feature the contributions of top female players like Annie Duke every issue.

But is there a wolf in sheep's clothing here, are these magazines really being bought for Mothers on this special day? "It may be like the Simpson's episode where Homer buys a bowling ball for Marge - with his own name on it! On the other hand, we have strong support from women who play pocker, so it may be a gift that mothers are requesting their husbands to buy them. Either way, I'm pretty sure that both husband and wife will be flipping through the pages," said Bluff Editor, Michael Caselli.

The Women's Pocker Network and The World Women's Pocker Tour have been established to provide information, education, and opportunity for women interested in entering the fast growing world of organized Pocker. The WPN/WWPT has several tournament events currently scheduled and more on the way. When visiting them online women will find articles featuring top pocker rooms, calendars of events, a forum to share their thoughts and experiences in Pocker and much more. The Reno Hilton will be the site of the next event on April 2, and 3, 2005. This two day Tournament will feature a Limit and No Limit event along with a Pocker Seminar for registered players led by Linda Johnson and Jan Fisher. The Hilton is offering great discounted room rates for event participants.

Matt: I think 2005 was a year of pocker trying to find itself really. I mean some of the things that I've seen are amazing. Just some great, great things have happened. But I think everybody's fighting for their place right now. And I see it now more than ever. With all the television coverage and the Internet's free pocker, and where is that all going, it's kind of, not a scary time, but an interesting time for pocker, and I don't know where it's gonna go from here.
